Dr. Hoffman: "Taking Prevpac to Target H Pylori, When an Ulcer or Inflammation Aren't Present, Is Crazy!"
A caller to Health Talk said she was prescribed Prevpac after having an Endoscopy. Her doctor said to take it for her H pylori. She told Dr. Hoffman she started taking the Prevpac and now her stomach hurts so much. Dr. Hoffman said, "Prevpac is a combination of an acid blocker and 2 antibiotics. Taking Prevpac to target H pylori, when an ulcer or inflammation aren't present, is crazy! Many people have H pylori and it plays a protective role for the esophagus. Mother Nature put H pylori there for a reason. Prevpac was killing her good bacteria, which was creating gastrointestinal distress." Dr. Hoffman recommended she stop taking Prevpac and take a good probiotic, track down any dietary triggers, overgrowth of intestinal yeast (which can cause bloating & gas production), or inflammation (that can be treated with DGL - a specialized form of licorice). He also recommended she get a copy of his out of print book, available on Amazom.com.

Anonymous, I would follow Dr. Hoffman's suggestions given in this posting above. According to Dr. Stephen Sinatra, the best probiotic is the heavily studied 299V, available at this link. http://www.iherb.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Ideal-Bowel-Support-299v-30-Veggie-Caps/23209?at=0
