Prescription Omacor Is Omega-3 Fish Oil

Gary Null read summaries of many research articles on Omega-3 fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish or fish oil and possibly from flax seed, walnut oil, and avacado oil was shown to:

• Lower triglycerides
• Reduce cardiac arithmea & sudden death from it
• Slow plaque growth in your arteries
• Inhibit cancer - especially prostate & breast cancer
• Boost bone health
• Reduce pain from arthritis
  

Gary suggests eating wild fish, not farm raised fish. He said Pacific Northwest salmon or Alaskan salmon are ok, but not North Atlantic salmon.

Prescription Omacor was approved by the FDA specifically for treating elevated triglycerides. Why would anyone buy prescription Omacor? The only reason Gary could think of, is that they don't know you can buy Omega-3 fish oil in the health food store. He said Omacor was about $128 for a bottle of 120 one gram capsules. At the link below, a bottle of 100, 200 mg, Omega-3 fish oil capsules (manufactured in Norway under strict quality standards) is about $5. Omacor is 5 times more concentrated than the oil at the link below. I'd rather have it as found in nature, especially since it costs over 5 times more for the prescription! Of course if your healthcare pays for it, we are all paying for it, while the drug companies make their vast profits. Dr. Stephen Bittiker said he thought that Omacor would not work as well because of what is done to the fish oil.

Update: August 1, 2007 - 1,000 mg capsules are now in stores. The excellent brand below has 650 mg of EPA and 450 of DHA per capsule. Omacor has 465 mg of EPA and 375 of DHA per capsule. Why pay 3 times more for less? Because your insurance covers Omacor? According to Dr. Stephen Bittiker, with what is done to the fish oil in Omacor, he doesn't believe that it will work.
