Whey & Fermented Soy Protein Powders
Dr. Sherrill Sellman, N.D., a guest on Let's Talk Nutrition, talked about the types of protein powders available to add to your diet. She did not recommend protein powder as your only source of protein. If you don't have a dairy allergy, whey protein is good. The only soy protein powder she recommends is fermented soy protein. Regular soy protein powder is not easily digested and can cause problems, such as interfering with thyroid function. Fermented soy protein powder is predigested by probiotic bacteria. This fermentation improves the digestibility of soy and promotes optimal immune function and intestinal health. Cooking or baking with fermented soy protein can deactivate the digestive emzymes. Since fermented soy protein contains naturally occuring phytoestrogens, do not take more than 2 servings a day and do not give to children under 12 years old.
