NIH Statin Drug Study Shows Many Patients Developed Memory Problems

Dr. Beatrice Golomb, from the University of California in San Diego, headed a study on statin drugs for the National Institute of Health. The major statin drugs are Lipitor, Lescol, Mevacor, Pravachol, Zocor, and Crestor. Many of the patients in her study, who took statin drugs, had memory problems. They had difficulty in remembering names - even those of loved ones, and where they were going, or why. She said there is not really evidence that the benefits excede the harms for women, elderly, or men who are not at high risk. Dr. Colomb also said that patients on statins are at increased risk for developing muscle weakness, nerve damage, and cancer.
