More Niacin (Vitamin B3) Advice
See my January 10, 2006, posting - Niacin (Vitamin B3) for Bleeding Gums, Arthritis, & Longer Life. Dr. Stephen Bittiker, on his Natural Health and You show, explained the differences between the various types of niacin. Regular niacin taken in doses over 50 mg can cause flushing. Flushing is when the face & neck get red, itching may occur, & you feel warm. A normal reaction, but some people don't like it.
- Sustained Release Niacin - less flushing reaction, studies show can damage the liver, not recommended
- Niacinamide - does not cause flushing, not effective to lower cholesterol, not recommended
- Inositol Hexanicotinate Niacin (Flush Free) - does not cause flushing, much less likely to cause liver damage, effective to lower cholesterol, highly recommended
