She went on 500 mile walks with a Portuguese shoemaker. He widdled the wood from the wooden shoe molds until they had it just right. It took her 5 years to develop the concept. When the store opened, they noticed 1,000s of young people passing by. When asked where they were going, they said it was Earth Day, they were going around the corner. Although the shoes were then called Minus Heel Shoes, the storekeeper quickly made a letter size sign he put in the window, saying Earth Shoes.
